Welcome to Ewell Cricket Club!

How to get involved

Over the last 5 years we have grown from 6 children to over 100.  This has required a lot of help from parents like yourselves.  We all do this because our children want to play cricket.  With the growth of the club we want to give as many children as possible the opportunity to play in a competition.  Last year we ran 3 teams but on feedback from parents and kids, who were keen for more opportunity to compete, we have entered 5 teams in the league this year.  In order to make this work we will need involvement from as many people as possible.

Each team requires the following:

Coach – All our coaches are parent volunteers with children playing at the club who have completed coaching courses paid for by the club.  If any parent would like to be considered for next season please talk to Gill or Paul for more information

Coach’s Assistant/s :All the coaches need assistants and this is an ideal role for any parent who wants to get a bit more involved without the commitment of taking the course.  This would involve assistance at the training sessions and any matches that their children are playing in.

Manager –  you don’t need to know anything about cricket just be good at organising and happy to send out emails and liaise with clubs and make sure parents and children know what games they are playing.  You will also need to enter the match scores into Play Cricket after the match. We currently have 2 full time working mums who manage 2 of the teams and who really enjoy it and find it very manageable alongside work and family life.

Scorers (minimum 4) you don’t need to know anything about cricket or have a degree in maths you just need a willingness to learn and to enjoy supporting and watching your children succeed, whilst gaining a little more knowledge of the game.  It is very easy to learn and we will be running practice sessions early in the season which are always good fun.

Squash and biscuits – you need to purchase biscuits (reimbursed by club) ahead of a home game for both teams and check with bar staff that there is enough squash and cups and be there to organise it on the day.

Social Events

These are a key part of the club calendar that everybody enjoys, kids and adults alike.  Last year we had a couple of barbecues, a quiz night and a very successful wine tasting evening run by volunteers to raise funds for the club.  If you have any ideas for events or would like to get involved or help with the barbecues then please let us know.  This year we would love to have occasional barbecues on Thursday evenings after training but this is dependent on people stepping forward to help.  More details to follow throughout the season.

We do also need a few volunteers to come to the club on Friday morning / afternoon to clean up after Thursday night training.  If anyone can spare a couple of hours this can be shared between a few parents / grandparents.

The cricket season is very short and if everyone steps forward to volunteer in some capacity however big or small it will share the responsibility and make it more enjoyable for all.  It is a lovely way to have involvement in your child’s hobby as well as meeting new people.

     May/June 2017

Congratulations to the U8s who won their very first match! Thank you to all the parents who turned up to support, the coaches and the scorers – we couldn’t do it without you.  Also welcome and congratulations to Jane Stewart who is now our U8 Manager – what a great start.  A special mention as well to Elise Hannay, who according to Colin Tong (a previous VP who came to watch our first game), was the first girl to bowl for the club since the 1930s and did some excellent bowling.  We also had a note from the opposing team thanking us for a great game and complementing our children on their behaviour.

Thank you to everyone who turned up to the scoring practice session.  It would help if I had a list of those who can now score so that help for the matches can be organised before the game – could you please send me a note to let me know if you are now able to score/umpire. We will be organising more games so there will be more opportunity to learn.

In order to help organise matches I would ask if you could read the emails and reply.  They are for your benefit and information and they help us to organise teams for the matches.  I would like to set up Whatsapp groups for individual teams (U8s, Eagles, Llamas etc) so if you could let us know if you have Whatsapp please.  It’s the best way to let you know if matches have been cancelled or if we urgently need another player.

Another reminder to make sure all equipment is named and for the children to be aware that there are club bats to borrow but they are not to help themselves to other children’s bats – they must check with a coach first.  Also if your child is due to play in any league matches please make sure you have purchased a shirt and have cricket whites which can be purchased from sports direct.  If you are thinking of buying a bat for your child you don’t need to spend a fortune but please make sure you get the correct size as some are struggling to play with heavy oversized bats!

Obviously the bar is always open on a Thursday evening but if you would prefer tea/coffee these are also available for a small charge of £1.  Everything is in the kitchen just help yourself and please put £1 in the blue charity box.

The nets at the club are there for members to use – both adults and children (with supervision).  Please feel free to come down and use them for practice.  There are occasions when they are used for training (Tuesday and Wednesday) but are free to use on a Friday, Saturday and Sunday in between adult and children’s games.  If in doubt please just ask.

Help your children play more cricket by drinking Wine!  On 7th July we are having a wine tasting evening.  Run by a professional company, tickets will be priced at £15 and this will include free flowing wine all night and food.  We are looking for at least 10 teams of 6 so if you think you can get a team together please speak to Claire Humble or myself – alternatively we can put you into teams.  Tickets will be going on sale in the next couple of weeks.  This will be a great evening and in return you will be helping to support the club.

11th June – Chairmans Day (U8s and U11s all have home games in the morning, plus there will be a BBQ and an adult game in the afternoon – please All make the effort to attend even if your child isn’t playing
